Like many other Civil Service and Police Exams, the NYPD Exam contains several sections: Memorization, Spatial Orientation, Written Comprehension, Written Expression, Information Ordering, Inductive Reasoning, Deductive Reasoning, Visualization, Problem Sensitivity, etc.

Let's start with the Memorization questions. This section, considered the most challenging part of the test, gives you 10 minutes to study a photo's details without taking notes or revisiting the image. The questions will focus on the most basic aspects of the picture.

Example: A Police Officer might use this skill to identify individuals wanted for questioning, making it a valuable skill in daily activities.

Memorization

INSTRUCTIONS: Study the image below very carefully for five minutes. You will be asked detailed questions about this image throughout the following questions. Once you are instructed to turn the page, you will not be allowed to look back at the photograph. (In this practice test we suggest that you zoom in and look very carefully at the picture)

memorization 1

Question #1

How many bicycles can be seen clearly/ fully in the photo? (Not cut, cropped, or hidden)

The answer is 1, although there are two bicycles, one of them is hidden by a car and can’t be seen fully. (The orange arrow for the bicycle, and the green arrow is for the hidden bicycle.)

Question #2

What is between the two U.S.A flags?

  1. Brick wall
  2. Window
  3. Door
  4. There's only 1 usa flag

The answer is 3, the object between the U.S.A flags is a white door.

Question #3

Howw many people are visible in the photo? (Not cut, cropped, or hidden)

The correct answer is 3, there are three people fully visible in the picture, and another one is hidden by the person that walks next to them in the picture. (The orange arrow for the visible people and the green arrow is for the hidden person.)

💡Tip: As you view the photo, don't try to remember every single detail, as this can be overwhelming. Instead, focus on key elements that stand out, such as unique features, patterns, or distinctive objects. Try to create a mental "map" of the photo based on these key elements. When the viewing time ends, take a few seconds to consolidate your mental image before attempting to answer the questions. This selective approach can help you recall important information efficiently and improve your accuracy in memorization questions.

While practicing with our NYPD Exam PrepPack, you can practice dozens of questions like these and ensure you'll be able to distinguish between those types of questions and solve them correctly. You can find a comprehensive study guide, full simulations, feedback, and solving tips in our NYPD Exam PrepPack.

Spatial Orientation

Next, we'll explore Spatial Orientation questions. This part of the exam evaluates your relative (left-right) and absolute (north-south) directional skills, along with reading comprehension, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities. Typically, you'll be given a map and asked to identify the quickest route between two points. You may also need to pinpoint the last known direction or location of an object or person based on a written scenario.

Example: A Police Officer might employ this skill while patrolling their designated precinct, whether on foot or by vehicle.

An arrow on the street indicates that, along the entire road, traffic is only allowed to travel in the direction the arrow is pointing.

spatial

Question #4

  1. The Bank
  2. The Police
  3. Berta's Cakes
  4. The Clinic

The correct answer is 3.

1 is wrong because the bank is to the west/northwest of the community center.
2 is wrong because the Police Department is to the north.
4 is wrong because that would be to the east.

Question #5

  1. West
  2. East
  3. South
  4. None of the above

The correct answer is 4. The large park is southwest of the small park.

Question #6

The high school is ____ of the ______.

1. North, Gym
2. West, Townhall
3. South, Bank
4. Northeast, Soap factory

The correct answer is 1.

💡Tip: One of the best tips for specific map-based questions is quickly identifying key landmarks and paths. For written scenarios of spatial orientation, visualize the scene and use directional cues in the text to orient yourself. Always double-check your initial instinct against the map or scenario details.

Excellent practice tests

"The tests were excellent and certainly gave me practice for the actual tests I did the following day. Anyone who hasn't done any form of test for a long while should definitely do these tests before the actual assessments."

Very helpful

"The sample tests were spot on. And the many examples of working through weak areas are exactly what I was looking for. The sooner people sign up before being tested, the better they will score in the real test, in my view."

Great Asset

"I subscribed in order to get relevant practice for an upcoming assessment as part of a job interview. Just heard back I got 95% so on to the interview stage. What a great help these were particularly in managing time and managing nerves."

Written Comprehension

Now, we'll move on to another section you'll encounter in the assessment—Written Comprehension questions. In this section, you will be presented with several passages related to police work (e.g., a sample crime report) to test your ability to read and understand written information. After each passage, you will be asked a series of questions about the details of the text.

Example: This ability may be used by a Police Officer when reading policies, laws, and other legal documents, as well as traffic signs, and traffic violations reports, etc.

Answer the following question regarding the current information:

The latest public health campaign has sparked debate due to its graphic representation of the harmful effects of excessive sugar consumption. The campaign features images of severely decayed teeth and other health issues directly linked to high sugar intake. While the campaign has gained significant traction on social media and raised awareness about the dangers of sugar, it has also faced criticism. Critics argue that such graphic imagery can be distressing and counterproductive, potentially leading individuals to ignore or downplay the severity of their own health issues related to sugar consumption.

Question #7

  1. True
  2. False
  3. Cannot Say

The passage clearly indicates the purpose of the public health campaign: “The latest public health campaign. due to its graphic representation of the harmful effects of excessive sugar consumption.” Thus, the statement is true as the campaign’s aim is to raise awareness about the dangers of high sugar intake.

Question #8

What is a potential downside of the graphic imagery used in the sugar awareness campaign?
1. Causing unnecessary panic
2.Promoting sugar alternatives
3. Undermining dental health importance
4. Leading to avoidance or denial of health issues

The passage outlines a specific concern regarding the campaign's approach: “Critics argue that such graphic imagery can be distressing and counterproductive, potentially leading individuals to ignore or downplay the severity of their own health issues related to sugar consumption.” This suggests that the graphic imagery could lead to avoidance or denial of health issues, making D the correct answer. Other options are not supported by the passage.

Question #9

Which word would be an appropriate synonym for 'distressing' in the context of this passage?
1. Upsetting
2. Informative
3. Encouraging
4. Misleading

The term ‘distressing’ in the half of the passage is used to describe the negative reaction to the graphic imagery in the campaign: “Critics argue that such graphic imagery can be distressing. ” A suitable synonym that maintains the context of the passage is 'upsetting'. The other options do not accurately reflect the negative connotation of 'distressing' as used in this context.

💡Tip: The best tip for specific reading comprehension questions is to r ead each passage carefully, focusing on the main idea and key details. Before looking at the questions, briefly summarize the passage in your mind. This helps in recalling details when answering questions.

Information Ordering

Now we'll move on to another section you'll face—Information Ordering. This section involves sequencing rules or actions. The questions may include letters, numbers, pictures, words, procedures, sentences, and mathematical/logical operations that need to be placed in a specific order. Let's dive in and see what it's all about.

Example: This ability may be used by a Police Officer when storing found, seized, or recovered property.

Question #10

The following steps should be followed when administering CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). (These steps are not listed in the correct order.)

  1. Check for responsiveness of the victim
  2. Call for emergency medical help
  3. Begin chest compressions
  4. Open the victim’s airway
  5. Give rescue breaths
  6. Check the victim’s breathing
  7. Continue CPR until help arrives or the victim shows signs of life

The most logical order for the steps above is:

  1. 1,2,6,4,5,3,7
  2. 1,2,4,6,3,5,7
  3. 2,1,3,4,5,6,7
  4. 1,6,2,3,4,5,7
The correct answer is B.

The initial step in CPR is to check for the victim's responsiveness (step 1), immediately followed by calling for emergency help (step 2). Therefore, options C and D can be eliminated.

After calling for help, the next step is to open the victim’s airway (step 4) to ensure they can breathe. Only after this should you check the victim's breathing (step 6).

If the victim is not breathing, begin chest compressions (step 3), followed by rescue breaths (step 5), and continue CPR (step 7) until help arrives or the victim shows signs of life. Thus, A is not the correct answer, and B is the most logical sequence.

You may also have noticed:

It's crucial to open the airway before giving rescue breaths to ensure the air actually reaches the lungs. Also, chest compressions are more critical than rescue breaths if you are untrained or unsure.

Question #11

The following steps should be followed when extinguishing a small fire with a fire extinguisher. (These steps are not listed in the correct order.)

  1. Pull the pin on the extinguisher
  2. Approach the fire steadily and aim the extinguisher nozzle at the base of the fire
  3. Squeeze the extinguisher handle to release the extinguishing agent
  4. Call emergency services if needed
  5. Assess the size and type of fire to ensure it's safe to use an extinguisher
  6. Sweep the nozzle from side to side

The most logical order for the steps above is:

  1. 5,1,2,3,6,4
  2. 1,5,2,3,6,4
  3. 4,5,1,2,3,6
  4. 5,4,1,2,6,3
The correct answer is A.

The first step when encountering a small fire is to assess its size and type (step 5), to confirm if it's safe to use an extinguisher. Answer C starts with calling emergency services, which is not the immediate first step, so it can be eliminated.

After assessment, the next step is to pull the pin (step 1), aim at the base of the fire (step 2), squeeze the handle (step 3), and then sweep the nozzle (step 6). Calling for emergency services (step 4) is the last step if the fire cannot be controlled or extinguished. Thus, answers B and D are not correct.

You may also have noticed:

The PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) is the standard procedure for using a fire extinguisher, which follows after ensuring the fire is manageable with an extinguisher.

Question #12

The following steps should be followed when setting up a tent for camping. (These steps are not listed in the correct order.)

  1. Insert the tent poles into the corresponding flaps or loops on the tent fabric
  2. Find a flat, dry area to set up the tent
  3. Secure the tent to the ground with stakes
  4. Unfold the tent and lay it out on the ground
  5. Attach the rain fly if necessary
  6. Organize and store your camping gear inside the tent

The most logical order for the steps above is:

  1. 2,4,1,3,5,6
  2. 4,2,1,3,5,6
  3. 2,1,4,3,5,6
  4. 1,2,3,4,5,6
The correct answer is A.

The first step in setting up a tent is finding a suitable location: flat and dry (step 2). Therefore, answers B, C, and D can be eliminated, as they do not start with this crucial step.

After selecting the location, unfold the tent (step 4), insert the poles (step 1), secure it to the ground with stakes (step 3), attach the rain fly if needed (step 5), and finally, organize your gear inside (step 6). Thus, A is the correct sequence.

You may also have noticed:

Securing the tent with stakes is important before attaching the rain fly, as it stabilizes the tent, especially in windy conditions.

💡Tip: In these types of questions, it is crucial to identify the underlying pattern or rule governing the sequence. Start by looking for the simplest connections or order, then apply this to arrange the given items. Double-check to ensure the sequence logically follows the identified rule.

Inductive Reasoning

Next, we'll cover Inductive Reasoning, another section you'll encounter in your MTA Police exam. This section requires you to identify the crime committed in a given scenario based on offense classifications. It assesses your ability to apply rules to new situations. Some questions will include witness statements, and you'll need to determine which is most likely accurate.

Example: This ability may be used by a Police Officer when investigating specific offenses.

  3. Nurse Claire worked two different shifts in 36 hours.
  4. Nurse David exchanged shifts with two different nurses for two consecutive days off.

The correct answer is (A).

Answer (A) is impossible: "Nurses are not allowed to work more than 24 hours consecutively." – Nurse Amanda cannot work 24 hours straight even with a shift exchange.

Answer (B) is possible: With a 36-hour break between shifts, two consecutive days off are feasible without shift exchanges.

Answer (C) is possible: Working two different shifts in 36 hours is feasible, considering the mandatory 12-hour break between shifts.

Answer (D) is possible: Nurses can exchange shifts with others, allowing for two consecutive days off.

Question #14

  1. Nurse Emily worked a shift, took 12 hours off, then worked another 12-hour shift.
  2. Nurse Frank worked three 12-hour shifts in a row without breaks.
  3. Nurse Grace had 48 hours off between two shifts without making any exchanges.
  4. Nurse Harry swapped half of his 12-hour shift with Nurse Ian from another team.

The correct answer is (A).

Answer (A) is possible: With the mandatory 12-hour break, Nurse Emily can work another shift after her break.

Answer (B) is impossible: "Nurses are not allowed to work more than 24 hours consecutively." – Nurse Frank cannot work three shifts in a row.

Answer (C) is impossible: The maximum break between shifts, without exchanges, is 36 hours, not 48.

Answer (D) is impossible: Shift exchanges must be for whole shifts, not partial shifts.

Question #15

  1. Nurse Isabella took a 24-hour break between her shifts without exchanging any shifts.
  2. Nurse Jack worked for 12 hours, took an 8-hour break, then worked another 12-hour shift.
  3. Nurse Kelly worked two shifts with only a 10-hour break in between.
  4. Nurse Liam exchanged shifts with Nurse Mia, resulting in him working two 12-hour shifts with a 24-hour break in between.

The correct answer is (D).

Answer (A) is impossible: The maximum break between shifts without exchanging is 36 hours, not 24.

Answer (B) is impossible: "Every nurse must have at least 12 hours off between shifts." – An 8-hour break is not sufficient.

Answer (C) is impossible: "Every nurse must have at least 12 hours off between shifts." – A 10-hour break is not compliant with the rules.

Answer (D) is possible: Exchanging shifts can allow for a 24-hour break between two 12-hour shifts.

💡Tip: In these type of questions, it is crucial to understand the general rule or classification first. Then, carefully apply this rule to the specific scenario presented, ensuring that all aspects of the scenario are considered. Avoid overthinking or assuming information not given.

Impact of Telecommuting on Urban Traffic
With the rise of telecommuting, many employees are choosing to work from home, which has led to a noticeable reduction in urban traffic congestion. A recent study shows that cities with a high rate of telecommuting have experienced a significant decrease in peak hour traffic jams. The study also notes that telecommuting not only reduces the stress of commuting for individuals but also positively impacts the environment by reducing carbon emissions from vehicles. (D) Is incorrect as the text states that telecommuting reduces the stress of commuting for individuals.

Question #17

Renewable Energy Adoption in Developing Countries
Developing countries are increasingly adopting renewable energy sources to meet their power needs. The shift is driven by the declining cost of renewable energy technologies and the need to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels. A report indicates that solar and wind power are becoming more prevalent in these regions, leading to improved energy security and job creation in the renewable energy sector. However, the report also highlights the challenges faced by these countries, such as the need for substantial investment in infrastructure and the intermittency of renewable energy sources.

(B) Is incorrect as the interest in renewable energy is indicated, despite the challenge of intermittency.

(D) Is incorrect because the text states that the adoption of renewable energy has led to job creation in the renewable energy sector.

Question #18

Effects of Diet on Health
Recent research has shown a strong correlation between diet and health. Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in processed foods and sugars, are linked to a lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. The study further emphasizes that regular consumption of fast food and sugary drinks is associated with a higher risk of these diseases. Nutritionists recommend a balanced diet and regular exercise for maintaining good health and preventing chronic diseases.

  1. Eating fast food regularly has no impact on the risk of chronic diseases.
  2. Diets low in fruits and vegetables have been linked to a higher risk of chronic diseases.

💡Tip: For solving deductive reasoning questions effectively, focus on understanding the general rule or principle first, then apply it logically to the specific situation presented in the question. Deductive reasoning moves from a general rule to specific examples. Ensure that you clearly understand the rule or law given in the question, and then methodically apply it to the scenarios or choices provided. This approach will help you avoid assumptions or biases and lead you to a logical conclusion based on the given premises. Remember, in deductive reasoning, if the premises are true and you apply them correctly, your conclusion should also be true.

Visualization

Next in the NYPD exam is the Visualization section. This section tests your ability to recognize objects, including diagrams, geometric shapes, floor plans, and human faces, even after they have been altered or repositioned.

Example: This skill is vital for a Police Officer searching for individuals wanted for arrest or questioning, especially when these individuals may have altered their appearance.

Question #19

On the left is a portrait of a suspect. On the right are four different portraits. Out of the four, only one is the suspect. Assuming no plastic surgery or drastic changes to basic facial features have been performed and only superficial features (such as hair and/or glasses) have changed, choose the portrait that is most likely to be the suspect.

viz1

The answer is B.

This type of question can be slightly confusing. We recommend that you begin by eliminating the choices least likely to be the answer and then focus on the portraits more similar to that of the suspect. In this question we can see that A has the wrong eyes, C has the wrong nose and D has a different mouth from the portrait we need, therefore B is the answer.

Question #20

On the left a portrait of a suspect is presented. On the right are four different portraits. Out of the four, only one is not the suspect. Assuming no plastic surgery or drastic changes to basic facial features have been performed and only superficial features (such as hair and/or glasses) have changed, choose the portrait that is most likely not the suspect.

viz2

The answer is B.

B has a different nose in comparison to the suspect.

💡Tip: For solving visualization questions effectively, focus on maintaining strong spatial awareness and a keen eye for detail. Pay close attention to how objects are oriented and relate to each other, and note any subtle changes in position, shape, or appearance. Developing a mental image of the original state can also be helpful for comparison. This approach will aid in accurately identifying objects that have been altered or repositioned.

The correct answer is 2.

According to the RULE, “Vehicles must not block pedestrian crosswalks.” – Linda violated the RULE by parking her vehicle in a way that blocked a pedestrian crosswalk.

Answer choice A is incorrect because parking in a spot marked in blue is allowed.

Answer choice C is incorrect as despite parking in a designated spot, blocking a pedestrian crosswalk is a violation.

Answer choice D is incorrect as being within 18 inches of the curb does not negate the violation of blocking a crosswalk.

💡Tip:To effectively tackle problem sensitivity questions, which often involve identifying issues or conflicts in scenarios, it's crucial to carefully read and understand the context provided. Focus on identifying key elements and underlying issues in the scenario. Think about how different elements interact and what their potential implications are.
